Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) is a subsidiary company of Coal India Limited (CIL) which started its operations in 1975. MCL was established in 1992 after being carved out of South Eastern Coalfields Limited with its headquarters at Sambalpur. The company’s joint ventures include Mahanadi Basin Power Limited (SPV), MJSJ Coal Limited, MNH Shakti Limited and Mahanadi Coal Railway Limited.

MCL has been recognized as the highest spender for CSR in Odisha with a total spend of 168.44 crores in the fiscal year 2020-21. The company has focused its welfare activities mostly in areas like Jharsuguda, Angul, Khurda, Nuapada, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh. Additionally, MCL has also carried out CSR activities in Bolangir, Dhenkanal, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jajpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Rayagada, and Sonepur.
The major projects undertaken by MCL include the construction of boundary walls and toilets, supplying drinking water, tree plantation, construction of temporary sand bandhas on the bed of the Ib river, donating blankets and other necessities, road construction, construction of hostels and halls for schools, building toilets in schools, supplying water for domestic purposes, and construction of road over bridges.
