CSR initiatives of National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) in Odisha

National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) is one of the largest integrated Bauxite-Alumina-Aluminium-Power Complex in India, established on January 7, 1981. The company operates its captive Panchpatmali Bauxite Mines for the pithead Alumina refinery at Damanjodi, in the District of Koraput in Odisha and Aluminium Smelter & Captive Power Plant at Angul. The Government of India holds 51.28% of the paid-up equity capital of NALCO. The company has been actively involved in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities across Odisha. In the FY 2020-21, NALCO spent nearly Rs. 35 crores on its CSR initiatives in Odisha.

NALCO has been recognised as the third-highest spender for CSR in Odisha, with its major CSR activities being focused on improving the standard of living of the local communities residing in the vicinity of its establishments. The company’s CSR initiatives include the Open Defecation Free (ODF) programme in 05 villages of S&P Complex, Angul, support for plantation in and around Chandaka Damapara Wildlife Sanctuary, construction of a BT road from Malkarbandh to Maliput, and operation of Battery operated vehicle from Jagannath Ballav Matha to Shri Jagannath Temple. The company has also undertaken electrification work Post Fani renovation Works at Gandhi park and other places of Puri, Operation of Medical Health Unit (MHU) at peripheral villages of M&R Complex, Damanjodi Potangi, S&P complex, Angul, and Utkal D & E Coal Block, and supporting residential education to poor backward & tribal children from periphery villages of M & R Complex, Damanjodi & Pottangi.
NALCO’s CSR initiatives also include School education in Company-funded schools for students other than Nalco employee dependants, provision of a ventilator ambulance to the State Government, black topping of road from NALCO thana Chhak to IAPL square via Canal Road, Angul, and developmental projects like School building, Anganwadi centre, RCC road, Toilets & water drainage system in Ambagaon village, Damanjodi. NALCO has also undertaken constructions of classrooms, furnitures & sports materials to schools in Angul Districts and drinking water supply & provision of tube wells in Angul districts.
NALCO’s CSR policy aims to provide sustainable solutions and improve the quality of life of the communities residing in the vicinity of its establishments. NALCO’s CSR initiatives in Odisha are commendable and have positively impacted the lives of the local communities in various ways.
